Belgorod, Russia’s largest nuclear submarine

On July 8, 2022, a ceremony was held to hand over the research submarine Belgorod to the Navy.
The ship is designed to carry out various scientific tasks, search and rescue operations, and can also be used as a carrier of deep-sea rescue and autonomous uninhabited submersibles.
The submarine will serve in the Russian Navy Pacific Fleet. This submarine can stay below the surface for 120 days.

The Ultimate underwater drone: ‘Poseidon’

The Belgorod carries six nuclear-powered underwater drones dubbed “Poseidon”.
The drone is shaped like a giant torpedo, measuring 24 meters long and 1.6 meters in diameter.
To date, 30 of them have been delivered to the Russian Navy.

The submarine delivers the drone to the starting point. The device then dives to a depth of 1 kilometer and starts moving towards the target. The device accelerates to a speed of up to 200 km/h just before the attack. Finally, it surfaces and detonates the nuclear bomb.

Based in Vladivostok, Far East

The Belgorod will be stationed either at Bezhevinka in the Kamchatka Peninsula or Vladivostok in the Far East. The Bezhevinka base is undergoing rehabilitation and modernization. However, it could be monitored by U.S. forces based in Alaska. Therefore, the actual operational base for the Belgorod is likely to be Vladivostok.

The United States leads the world in submarine power. However, it is currently insufficient to defend the entire Pacific.
Russia continues to build new torpedoes and new nuclear submarines. Russia is also active in the Arctic Ocean and the North Pacific.
In the South Pacific, it is more concerned with monitoring Chinese submarine bases.

“How can the U.S. Navy deal with the problems beneath the sea?”
